During the onward approach of summer breezes, homeowners get all excited to decorate their yards for the sunny
season. Preparation includes the installation of sod to grow greener grasses. There’s a common
myth prevalent that thriving sod is difficult in Albuquerque, NM. However, the truth is, one needs to go
by the books and continue to work on it for weeks after installation.

Let’s Look at Soil Preparation For Sod
● All the rocks and debris should be removed from the area. Then it should be raked flat.
● Peat moss or soil rich in nutrients should be added to the area.
● Now, the soil should be turned about 6-8 inches with the help of a rototiller. The area
needs to be raked again to eliminate the rocks and debris that might have entered the
area.
● A smooth surface should be created by raking and compacting the soil. This can be
done by either tampering or walking. It should be ensured that the ground is spongy yet
solid enough to not sink when you walk on it. Also, the area should be around 2 inches
under any cement, walks, or pavers to permit the thickness of the sod.

How Should The Sod Be Installed?
● The sod should be laid on a straight edge like a walk. The sod should be placed
horizontally with the street or house. In case of an irregular pattern, one should use
string and stakes to create a straight edge.
● Keep the edges of sod together for promoting fast knitting of edges.
● The sod should be cut using a serrated knife or sod knife to place around trees, irregular
borders, or other areas.
● Fertilization should be done on the day of installation. Fertilizers should be watered in
the lawn just after the application to prevent burning the sod.

How To Maintain The Sod?
● The sod should be watered heavily for the first two days. Water should be visible but
don’t have standing water. This should be followed thrice a day.
● Water thoroughly for the next 10-12 days without flooding
● Slowly reduce the water every day. Do this for a week.
● 21 days after the installation, one can determine the amount of water the sod requires.
Then, the watering schedule should be matched to the need.
● Then, the lawn should be fertilized after 4-6 weeks of installation
