Albuquerque Landcaping Irrigation System Winterization
During winter, there is a risk of a drip irrigation system freezing, and it is damaged by the freezing temperatures in most of the country. Just follow the simple measures listed below to ensure that your irrigation system in Albuquerque is prepared for the winter.
Turn off the machine and drain the fluids
Turn off the primary water supply and remove the faucet assembly (which may include a timer, filter, pressure regulator, and other components) located at the beginning of the system. To prevent damage caused by cold temperatures, these components need to be drained and moved inside. To prevent damage and corrosion, battery timers should have their batteries removed during winter.
To empty the irrigation system, turn on the manual valves and remove any end fittings. Freezing temperatures do not damage poly mainline tubing. However, water left in fittings can cause them to shatter. To ensure that the fittings are completely drained, slightly raise them above the level of the lines as you drain them.
Flush Valves may be added at low spots along the line to facilitate the process of draining the system. When the system is turned off, the flush valves will open, allowing any water still in the line to drain out. In addition, emitters can be added at low points to help with drainage if necessary.
Clearing the air between the lines
The use of compressed air to blast out the lines is yet another way that is commonly used. This is an efficient approach that will save you time. Before blowing out the lines, ensure that the termination fittings have been removed to prevent any damage to the irrigation system.
Put a stop to the gaps in the open lines
After the lines have been emptied, all end fittings must be replaced. Keep end caps off to allow for proper drainage during the winter. Leave end caps off.
It is recommended that the beginning of the system, where the faucet assembly had been removed, be blocked off as well. To ensure that the female hose starts fitting at the beginning of the system and is completely sealed, use a female hose stopper. Covering the system’s opening with a barrier, such as a plastic bag or another kind, is another option.
Never leave lines open; debris, insects, and other critters may seek shelter in the open lines. Never leave lines exposed.
Spring start-up
When you turn the system back on for the new growing season, you should ensure that all end caps are securely fastened and check for any leaks or damage that may have occurred over the winter. In battery timers, it is essential to use fresh alkaline batteries and replace any broken, cracked, or otherwise compromised components.
